UC Eco-Survival Week 2010

Following on from the successes of eco-my-flat, and the Eco-living workshops, the UC Sustainability Office has decided to end the year with an Eco Survival Week, held from Monday, 11th to Friday, 15th October. Featuring talks, workshops, cooking demos, a clothes swap, and the Awakening the Dreamer symposium, Eco Survival Week will also include a week long Permaculture Course. All events are free (aside from the Permaculture Course), so if you’re feeling like you might like to learn a little more about long term survival, read on:

Monday 11 October

Environment, Animal Rights and Veganism (12:00 - 1:00 pm, Science Lecture 5)

Shanti Ahluwalia will lead a discussion on the issues behind free range, vegetarian and vegan diets.

Awakening the Dreamer Symposium: CANCELLED

Apologies, we have had to cancel this session as the presenter is no longer available. Please keep an eye on our site, though, as we plan to run this in the near future.

Awakening the Dreamer is a popular symposium for people who wish to connect with others concerned about the big challenges of sustainability, spirituality, and social justice.

Week Long Permaculture Course (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, $15 for week, please register with matthew.morris@canterbury.ac.nz by Friday 8 October)

Kate Henry will take this week long introductory course to permaculture principles, which includes four evening theoretical sessions, with a full day of practical application (Saturday 23 October). Permaculture encourages a sustainable, commonsense and ethical approach to life. Entry is by registration only.

Tuesday 12 October

Eco Office: Green Purchasing (12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, Sustainability Office, Facilities Management)

As part of the UC Eco Office Guide project, Adrian Teather will lead a workshop on green purchasing for UC office users.

The Eco & Health Effects of Food (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, The Mix, UCSA)

Steve Kung will give a talk about the benefits of local food, the connection between food and health, and the differences between true food vs. junk food.

Wednesday 13 October

Organic Pest Management (12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, Community Garden, Engineering Road)

Award winning organic landscape architect, Carl Pickens will share his knowledge of pest management with the UC gardening group.

Clothes Swap! (4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, UCSA Ballroom Foyer (next to the Foundry)

Clean out the old and make way for the new. Please drop in any offcast clothes to the Sustainability Office (Facilities Management) over the next week, or bring them on the day. All participants will be encouraged to show off their new outfits for Green Drinks at the Foundry following the swap.

Thursday 14 October

Vegetarian Cooking on a Student Budget (12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, The Mix, UCSA)

A reformed master chef reconnecting with nature through food, Jon Ward will lead a talk and cooking demo about creating great, healthy food when you don’t have much money.

Collaboration for Change Workshop (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm please register with helen.tulett@cantebury.ac.nz – registration essential)

Helen Tulett will lead this experience based project, created with and by students who want to be active in creating change in their sphere of influence.

Friday 15 October

Vegan Cooking Demo (12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Okeover Community Garden, Engineering Road)

Expert vegan Shanti Ahluwalia will lead a demonstration showing the basics of simple vegan cooking, including pizza baked in the Community Garden pizza oven – Yum!

Community Garden Working Bee (2:00 pm - 5:00 p, Okeover Community Garden, Engineering Road)

Gardening guru Jonny Platt leads the regular Friday afternoon gardening bee in the UC Community Garden. A chance to get your hands in the soil with fellow students, staff and locals, before taking home some harvest goodies.
