Waste Reduction Educator

Sharon McIver has a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the School of Arts at the University of Canterbury.

The University of Canterbury (UC) Waste Reduction Educator role was created to assist the University in significantly reducing the amount of waste leaving the university as landfill and recycling, and the amount coming in as packaging. Initiatives to obtain this goal include:

  • Ongoing auditing and monitoring of the current waste system
  • Development of resources for use through the UC community
  • Designing and implementing behaviour change projects for UC staff and students.
  • Continuous improvement of waste systems
  • Working with procurers and café managers to find alternative solutions to non-sustainable packaging
