Term Two update
Thank you to everyone who came along to the film series last term, we hope you all had a great time and learned a lot! The series started with two films exploring the inspirational leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, and the effect of personal action upon social change; we then visited Palestine, and some of the human and environmental effects of the relation between Palestine and Israel; the third night considered aspects of rapid social change and their effect upon people and the environment; and the final film visited Curitiba, Brazil, with an inspirational look at comprehensive and forward-thinking city planning, and the resultant positive social, economic and environmental outcomes. Garbage Warrior
Renegade architect Michael Reynolds builds self-sufficient off-grid communities using a combination of natural and waste materials; the film initially follows his struggle against antiquated legislation in the United States, then focuses on the work performed by him and his team in helping to rebuild communities devastated by natural disasters, such as the Boxing Day Tsunami.

Hosted by the Campus Greens
The Power of Community
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time.
Thursday 6th August, 7pm in the International Room, UCSA Building
Hosted by SAFE
Peaceable Kingdom
A touching portrait of five animal farmers struggling with the ethical tensions inherent in their way of life. On the one hand, the forces of economics and tradition dictate that the animals on their farms be valued only by the income they produce, their purpose being fulfilled when they are sent to market. On the other hand, their humanity asks them to respect the animals they care for as individual beings, to acknowledge they have relationships with one another and the people who care for them, and a strong will to live.
Thursday 13th August, 7pm in the International Room, UCSA Building
Hosted by All Clubs
A Selection of Short Films
