How do I join UC Rideshare?

At University of Canterbury (UC), carpooling - also called ridesharing - refers to people who drive to/from University with at least one other staff member or student.

rideshare signThe purpose of UC Rideshare is to encourage staff and students who might otherwise drive by themselves to share a ride with other people. UC supports people who car-pool to/from campus by setting aside rideshare priority car parks close to main buildings and lecture theatres for registered UC Rideshare users.

Rideshare gives you more options for travelling to and from campus, and is as flexible as you want it to be: you can carpool every day or carpool once a week. The decision is yours.

What to do

Step 1: Find carpool partners:

This year, UC Rideshare matching software is unavailable. However, most people who have registered with UC Rideshare in the past have found their carpool partners through other means anyway, such as flatmates, friends, and colleagues. To find carpool partners, students could submit a notice in Canta classifieds; staff and post-graduate students could submit a notice in the UC Diary classifieds section. Alternatively, if you have signed up to the UC Sustainability Community, you can add a notice to the Rideshare/carpool forum at the UC Sustainability Community on Learn/Moodle. Get in contact with any relevant people to establish a carpool and make your travel arrangements. (See carpooling tips and frequently asked questions for more advice on running a carpool.)

Step 2: Register with UC Rideshare

Download and complete a 2010 Rideshare carpool registration form (pdf, 44 KB). All members of your car-pool must take your completed car-pool registration form along with your student or staff IDs to the Parking/Security Office under the Central Library, to collect your Rideshare priority-park cards.

Step 3: Use the rideshare priority parks

Be sure to display clearly at least two current Rideshare cards on your dashboard whenever you use the priority parks, along with a valid UC parking permit. Note that you must only use the priority parks on days that you actually carpool. In addition, if you arrive during 8 am and 11 am Monday to Friday and use a rideshare park, two or more people must get out of the car.
